Description
Latin Name: Conopomorpha cramerella
Lure: Plastic Vial
Lure Active Ingredient: EZZ-4,6,10-16Ac, EZZ-4,6,10-16OH, EEZ-4,6,10-16Ac and EEZ-4,6,10-16OHField Life: Thirty (30) days.
Trap to Use: Plastic or Paper Delta Trap
Monitoring Strategy: Look for exist holes and/or larval debris on the pods. Look for premature ripening of the pods. Look for the tunneling by the larvae inside the pods, and beans that stick together making it difficult to extract them from the pods. Adults can sometimes be seen on the underside of horizontal branches. Check with Cooperative Extension or Master Gardener for local information and recommendations.
Cultural and Physical Control: Prune trees every 6 months to ensure an open canopy. Pick mature pods every 7 days or as soon as possible. Bury any infested pods found
Distribution: Widespread. South and Southeast Asia, Oceania, Papua New Guinea
Hosts: Cocoa (Theobroma cacao), Pacific lychee (Pometia pinnata), Rambutam (Nephelium lappaceum), and Cola (Cola acuminata).
:
Adult: Mosquito-sized, about 5-7 mm long, and brown with bright yellow patches at the tips of the forewings. Adults have long antennae, swept back while resting, with a wingspan of 12mm
Larvae: First-instar larvae are translucent white in color and ca 1 mm long. Late-instar larvae are ca 10 mm long and creamy colored while still inside the pod, but greenish after they emerge to pupate.
Eggs: Yellow-orange, flattened and just visible to the naked eye (ca 0.5 0.2 mm). Rectangular indentations cover the surface of the egg. On hatching, eggs become translucent, the shell being whitish.
Life Cycle: Eggs are laid on the surface of pods that are 2-6 weeks from the first sign of yellowing. The eggs hatch in about 3 days, and then tunneling begins. The larvae go through the husk into the pulp around the beans, and into the placenta that hold the beans together. After 14-18 days and 3-5 molts, the larvae begin to pupate. The adult moth emerges after 6-8 days. They are active at night and live 27-33 days.
